Entry Level Jobs

I have found the entry level positions in several fields to require more education and skills than I have. In addition to many requiring a Bachelor's Degree, programs such as: InDesign, Quark, Flash, XHTML, and CMS also are desired.

My desired field is Website Design. I also researched Advertising Design. The only positions available to me now are in print, not web. Even the assistant jobs require more than I'm proficient in. I noticed Adobe InDesign, CMS, and Flash are important for me to know in several fields. I'm glad I plan on going on for my Bachelor's, still, I'd like to impress any applications for a scholarship with what I know now!

The jobs are mainly located in cities, although I found some in Northern NJ. I plan on achieving my Bachelor's to be qualified to apply for many jobs in my field. I will need to learn Flash and CMS. I know some advertising skills are necessary, such as InDesign, and communication skills. Some basic office software like Excel and proficiency in PowerPoint will help me advance. Some employers mention experience in the field equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree is sufficient. All employers are looking for experience in the field. I have discovered Internships are imperative to show some experience when job hunting.

  1. If web design is really where you want to go, you should focus on that. Print design is an entirely different beast.

Have you taken all the web classes Mercer offers? If so, get yourself some books on web design and complete some self guided projects.

www.csszengarden.com is a great place to play around with CSS. Lynda.com has great online video tutorials for almost everything web related.

The most important thing is to keep creating work. The more practice you give yourself, the better you will be. You cannot expect to become a web designer after only making one or two websites. So the best thing to do is to just keep at it!

You can mess around with the CSS and images of your blog too! Just keep creating work!
