Technology, Software and Hardware used in Website Design and Development
The software is dependent on an internet connection. The technology offered by Firefox is beneficial. Some servers will not display the creation the same way others do. It is an asset to be able to create a working website that will be viewed through Internet Explorer as well as Firefox. Unfortunately, many of the target audiences may not use any other server than Internet Explorer. In order to showcase my work I need domain space. Otherwise, any view would be static, not interactive, the most important aspect of the program.
I will need a working knowledge of Dreamweaver. It is sometimes unpredictable to use this software. Even when given the appropriate commands, the software does not always respond accordingly. Not only patience is required, also the ability to try a different approach when the desired results are not achieved. Working knowledge of CSS and HTML is expected. I have a way to go until I've mastered the two. CSS is compelling and I am eager to delve deeper into the possibilities. I will also need to use java scripts effectively. They can be trying at times, still a great resource to incorporate in the proceedure.
Photoshop and Illustrator are instrumental in using images, or decorative typefaces. The visuals draw the viewer's attention through well formatted sites. This keeps the viewer interested and can make for intuitive and fun navigation. I enjoy using both programs and don't find it a "menial" task to create the visuals. Even if it's not the most compelling aspect of web design I respect it as part of an integral process.
As I learned when job hunting, there is more software required for many potential jobs. Knowledge of Flash, Quark, and Xtmhl are expected in the field I'm considering.
A Mac, PC or maybe one of the combo Mac/PC's that are on the market now is a necessity. A laptop is always helpful for meetings, or travelling. I have yet to research the recommended wacom tablet, and will.
It is still possible to be a part of the Website Design and Development process with the skills and knowledge I have of the proceedure. However, the production may seem overwhelming at times when considering all the tasks from start to finish. The field is always changing and improving. Teaching could be a valuble way to spend some time in order to have an income while learning the latest programs.

Nowadays, web designers are very very different than web developers! Designers focus on the LOOK of a site and developers make it happen.
ReplyDeleteIt could be possible that you land a job designing websites in photoshop and illustrator and never have to do anything with Dreamweaver, CSS, HTML, Java or any of the others.
Smaller studios will definitely look for their designers to be able to handle some of the development as well - so I'm not saying that you won't HAVE to learn this stuff - in fact you definitely should because it will make you a better designer, but it is possible to not have to do it professionally.
You should also expand your search to the major corporations in NJ - they all have creative services departments and will need web work done!
